REVIEWS

“The enthusiastic crowd inside Guilford College’s Dana Auditorium leapt to its feet Saturday night at the conclusion of the world premiere of Lowell Liebermann’s ”Symphony No.4.” While most audiences shy away from new compositions, the sold-out crowd reveled in the work’s colorful and enticing score….The one-movement, 20-minute work was full of intriguing timbres, such as the delicate opening harp-and-bell combination. Then there was the virtuosic writing that had practically everybody on the stage playing at maximum speed. The end result was an exhilarating look at a postmodern aesthetic that doesn’t reject accessibility. A smiling Liebermann, who was in the audience, accepted the tumultuous accolades of the crowd.”
